It’s been a while since I have written a post, but today “the spirit moved me.” Later this week I am hosting an event at RAE’S READS BOOK HUB to see if I can stir up some interest in poetry among younger people, aka kids, in my neighborhood. my school, and among my friends’ grandkids. Specifically, my target audience is from precocious fourth graders through high schoolers. I want to do a discussion about what poetry is, and what it is not. I’ve titled the flyers APPRECIATING POETRY WORKSHOP.
If anyone shows up, I’ll hold a brief discussion along the lines of what is mentioned in the previous paragraph. Then, breaking them up into age=appropriate groups, if necessary, I’ll teach them to write a Cinquain.

After we share them (if students wish to), we’ll have a snack, pick out free books, and perhaps some will share other poems they’ve written with me.
My goal? To discover potential poets I can encourage to compile, and… Who knows? Maybe even print a chapbook or publish a collection of poems by the end of the summer. So many young people have notebooks full of poems they have written, and. to mentor and assist a few these young poets as my “summer project” will bring me joy.
Stay tuned to the outcome of this event.
